"Memorial do Convento" Tour
The novel by José Saramago, Nobel laureate in literature, serves as inspiration for the cultural route that we want to make known in an original and fun tour. Going through some of the most emblematic places to the north of Lisbon, this tour passes some of the most significant points mentioned in the book "Memorial of the Convent".
One day option:
This sightseeing tour starts in Lisbon, in a place to combine. The passage through Praça da Figueira and the headquarters of the José Saramago Foundation, in the emblematic “Casa dos Bicos” will be obligatory points of passage. Next, we will take the direction of some points of patrimonial and landscape interest, located in the municipality of Loures:
The end of the Trancão River (the important communication route of the XVIII century referred to in the book), Unhos (a very old village, where we can see a landscape of Loures area and the River Trancão) and Tojal, with an important artistic building: the aqueduct, the Monumental Fountain and the Archbishop's Palace (XVIII century). Leaving the municipality of Loures, we drive to Mafra, where the old houses of the county and the pillory are important points of visit, along with the Palace / Convent, a school of 18th century art in Portugal, which serves as inspiration for the nobel book of literature. Riding the beaches of the region, the passage through the Sobreiro and the museum of pottery of Jose Franco are an unavoidable landmark. Before return to Lisboa, we will go through some beaches of Ericeira, important fishing port of other times and surf capital.
